By 1967, Ernie Richardson had gained a certain celebrity status as the skip who took the curling Richardson's to four World Championships. At the urging of friends, he turned the same fierce determination that saw him win on the curling ice and directed it towards building a lighting fixture supply shop. While the famous Richardson name initially opened some doors, it was the unswerving commitment to service and customer satisfaction by Ernie and his staff that saw the business grow rapidly. As Richardson's reputation for honest and knowledgeable service grew, so did their need for more stock and more space. A move from the first store at 1431 Scarth was made in 1973 to 2460 7th Avenue. After 9 years at 7th and McIntyre the store moved to their present location at 2101 7th Avenue.
A Saskatoon location was opened in April 1979, the store at that time had only 500sq feet of showroom and 2 full time employees. In May of 1984 the store moved to a larger location at 47th Street and Faithful, which is the current location today. A second location was opened in 1989 when we purchased Hilite Lighting on 8th Street E in 1989. In June 2000 the two Saskatoon locations were consolidated with the expansion and renovation of the 47th Street location. This expansion increased Richardson lightings' presence in Saskatoon to 16,000sq ft with a 6000sq ft showroom, the largest in Saskatchewan, and what some people in the industry say is one of the nicest showrooms in Canada. This location also employs 9 full time staff members.
Additional space was added to the Regina location in 1992 increasing the operation to 12,000sq ft with 3500sq ft showroom and 10 full time staff & 5 part time employees. Another evolution occurred in 2000 when the name Richardson House Of Fixtures was changed to Richardson Lighting to better convey who we are and what we do.
Individual customers and large contractors both depend on receiving personalized service and expert advise, knowing a liberal return and repair policy backs their every purchase. Although Ernie Richardson is proud of the phenomenal growth shown over the years he is equally proud of the old-fashioned philosophies of honest pricing and utmost service that still prevail at Richardson Lighting. In recent years the store has survived the influx of the Big Box stores relying on policies of exceptional service, competitive pricing with both contractors & customers.
